Headquartered in Sausalito, California, Aetheros spans the communications, electric utility, and smart metering industries. It offers an open-standard, secure, Linux based, distributed operating system for machines that addresses the coming generation of requirements arising from distributed renewable generation, battery systems, and electric vehicles.

More than 190 ITU-T member countries have approved OneM2M specifications as ITU standard, simplifying the IoT ecosystem lifecycle by reducing development, deployment and maintenance costs.

According to the company, their Aether Operating System (AOS) provides a oneM2M-compliant IoT Service Layer.

The California-based company's solutions have been commercially deployed across Australia and New Zealand and it is now bringing the AOS to the U.S. to meet the demand for smart meter-enabled distributed intelligence at the grid edge. Aetheros said there are currently over 100 million smart meter deployments in the U.S. and many of those are up for replacement.

The advent of smart meters - and the metering-related IoT breakthroughs made since - has become integral in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Applications abound; monitoring and controlling energy usage (and, with that, improving overall energy efficiencies), lowering total project costs, and sustainably supporting reduced carbon emissions.
